History
Shih Tzus were the prized posessions of Chinese royalty for over 1000 years. The origins are thought to be a cross of a Pekingese and a Lhasa Apso or Tibetian mountain dog. They were brought to the United States during World War 2 when they were found by soldiers.
Appearance
Solid and compact, alert expression, sturdy, large dark eyes, short muzzle
Color and Coat
All colors permitted but the most common are shades of gold, white and red. The Shih Tzu has a double coat that is dense, long and luxurious. AKC says the hair should be tied on top of the head.

The Shih Tzu is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. They do not require much exercise, but their coat needs constant maintenance and brushing. The Shih Tzu has a hypoallergenic coat which is good for owners with allergies. The Shih Tzu is often used to create hybrid breeds of Toy dogs.
