History
The Dachshund was first bred in Germany in the early 1600s and the literal translation is "badger dog". They have been referenced earlier in other countries as a larger dog. They have amazing scent and were bred to hunt for badgers and other small animals.
Appearance
Short legs and log body, muscular, with relatively large feet for digging, long nose for smelling.
Color and Coat
Variations in coat include smooth/short, long, or wirehaired. Their color can be single, single color with spots (dappled), two color, sable, brindle, etc. Colors can include red, cream, white, black, chocolate, wild boar, gray (blue), fawn (Isabella), etc.
Height
Variations in size include standard, mini, and rabbit. Standard dachshunds 8-11 inches, Mini dachshunds up to 7 inches.
Weight
Standard dachshunds average 15-32 lbs, Mini dachshunds weigh less than 11 lbs.
