History
Originated in Germany from a mix of herding and farm dogs. They were bred to herd sheep and protect farm animals from predators. German Shepherds came to America in the early 1900s.

The German Shepherd is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. They are highly intelligent and often used as police dogs, guard and military dogs. German Shepherds have a great sense of smell. One of the most famous German Shepherds was Rin Tin Tin from the 1920s who now has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!
