History
Cocker Spaniels date back before the 14th century as a Spanyell from Spain. They were used as gun dogs, retrievers, and love the water. It is believed the Cocker Spaniel came to America on the Mayflower in 1620. The AKC did not recognize the American Cocker Spaniel (as a separate breed from the English Cocker Spaniel) until 1946.

Color and Coat
The Cocker Spaniel comes in a variety of colors. Their coat is short on the head, medium length on the body, and should be silky and flat or slightly wavy. There are different varieties of color for the Cocker Spaniel - The Black Cocker Spaniel is solid jet black and can have tan points. Any Solid Color Other than Black (ASCOB) is any other solid color besides black from light cream to dark brown and red. The Parti-Color Cocker Spaniels are two or more solid colors that are distinct, one should be white.
