History
The Maltese was first recognized in Malta, which is how they got their name. They have belonged to royal families all over the world for almost 3000 years. They were always as small as they are today.
Appearance
Very small and compact with a proportionate head
Color and Coat
Single coated, with long flat silky hair. They should be pure white but can sometimes be light tan or lemon around the ears. The hair can be tied up on top of the head.

Other Facts
Maltese should be groomed daily because they have long coats. Because they have no undercoat and shed very little, they are said to be a hypoallergenic breed.
