| 2011 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show |
| Scottish Deerhound wins best in show honors | Posted by: Tina on February 16, 2011
| | We recorded both nights of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and watched all glorious 5 hours in one night! The lucky dogs got to stay in the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City where they were treated to a doggy day spa, a pet psychic, workout machines, and so much more! Our Weimaraner, Sophie, watched about 90% of the five hours of tv, she loves watching dogs. Unfortunately, the Hound group was not broadcast, but they told us Hickory the Scottish Deerhound (GCH Foxcliffe Hickory Wind) had won the Hound Group.
The Toy Group was the first full group we were able to see. I thought the Brussels Griffon (Cashnross' First Griff Tina Fey) was so adorable and had the best name - Tina Fey. The Smooth Chihuahua, DD (Ayrwen Star Kissed Delight) and the Havanese (Marcosa's Bachelor Button) had the cutest smiles, happy gait and great expression! Calvin the Pomeranian (Powerpom High Performance) was so spunky and did an awesome 360 turn! The Shih Tzu (Hallmark Jolei Austin Powers) had lovely shades of color in his coat and the Yorkshire Terrier (Pastoral Hit The Jackpot) had an adorable red bow that made his face look very cute. I thought the Miniature Pinscher (Marlex Classic Red Glare) had such a tough and proud demeanor.
The Toy Group had a lot of great competition but the Pekingese (GCH Palacegarden Malachy) came out on top! The Affenpinscher (GCH Banana Joe V Tani Kazari) got second place while the Pug (Ch Xoe's Oscar De La Hoya) and Papillion (Ch Copella's Rising Attraction) took third and fourth places.
Next, we watched the Non-Sporting Group. Some of my favorites were the American Eskimo Dog (Nuuktok's Atka Inukshuk) and the Bichons Frises (Saks Hamelot Little Drummer Boy) for their beautiful white coats, the Dalmation Ian (Spotlights Ruffian) and his tail that never stopped wagging, the Miniature Poodle (Surrey Sugar Baby) in all black, the Bulldogs (Itsa Brix) baby face, and Jayne the Shar-Pei (Vaje's Miss Jayne Hathaway) for her cute wrinkly legs.
In the end, one of my favorites of the night, the Chinese Shar-Pei Jayne (GCH Vaje's Miss Jayne Hathaway), took first place! In second place was the Bichons Frises (Saks Hamelot Little Drummer Boy). Third and fourth went to the Lhasa Apso (GCH My Thai Ta Sen Halleluiah Chorus) and the Keeshond (GCH Karolina Bonnyvale Meant To Be).
The third group we saw was the Herding Group. Beyonce the Australian Shepherd (Mysharas Dream Girl) had a cute face. The Bouviers des Flandres (Quiche's Grand Finale) looked like a gentle giant! I thought the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Molly (Segni At Coventry), was super cute and reminded me of a dog my dad had named Sandy. And Gabe, the Shetland Sheepdog (Leeason Rock My Soul) had beautiful coloring.
Of the Herding Group, the Bearded Collie (GCH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins) came in first, followed by the Belgian Tervuren (GCH Sky Acres Spy Plane) in second. Third and fourth place went to the Border Collie (GCH Bon-Clyde's Take One) and Pembroke Welsh Corgi (GCH Segni At Coventry). All were great dogs and deserved to be at the top!
When the Sporting Group was up, Sophie our Weimaraner got very excited watching the Brittany (Mich's Mt Ready Aim Fire). We are biased towards the Sporting Group because we have a German Shorthaired Pointer and a Weimaraner. The German Shorthaired Pointer (Robin Crest Spectacular Bid) was very white with a brown head and feet and looked much better filled out than our Colby. He was stunning! The German Wirehaired Pointer (Star K's Mile Hi Valentine) came on next and I was so intrigued because I thought she was the cutest scruffy dog I had ever seen! They mentioned the GWP was owned by the same people that own Carlee, which is Colby's aunt. The Golden Retriever (Sweetlea's Follow Me) had a young sweet face and the English Springer Spaniel (Wil-Orion's Twenty Twenty) had a lovely flowing coat. We thought the Vizsla (Cinnabars Aldebaran Epiphany) had great character and the Weimaraner (Silhouettes Lifeinthefastlane) was a big boy with a serious face.
The Sporting Group best in group was the Black Cocker Spaniels (GCH Casablanca's Thrilling Seduction). Second place went to the Irish Setter (Ch Jewelset's Up Up N Away). Third and fourth place went to the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon (GCH Fireside's Spontaneous Combustion) and the Irish Water Spaniels (GCH Poole's Ide Got Water RN).
Next up was the Working Group. The Working Group has some beautiful strong breeds. Some of the breeds that got my attention were - the Bernese Mountain Dog (Avatars Try Try Again) because it was so cute and big, Scarlett the Boxer (Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream) because she had such an alert expression, Fifi the Doberman Pinscher (Protocol's Veni Vidi Vici) had a serious yet sweet face, the Great Dane (Lobato's JitterBug Man) because he was large with a young spirit, the Great Pyrenees (Dieudonne William Of Orange) had a lovely cream coat and huge feet, and the Neapolitan Mastiff (Bruno Della Vecchia Roma) had a big wrinkly face and looked like Fang from Harry Potter. The Samoyed (McMagic's Candied Ham Of Pebblesrun) surprised me because I have not seen many and it looked like a fun ball of white fuzz!
The Working Group ended with the Portuguese Water Dog (GCH Aviators Luck Be A Lady) as number one and the Boxer (GCH Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream) as number two. The Kuvasz (GCH Szumeria's Wildwood Silver Six Pence) was third and the Samoyed (Ch McMagic's Candied Ham Of Pebblesrun) came in fourth.
The Terrier Group was the final group to show. We thought the Colored Bull Terrier (Glentom's You Were Mint For Me) had a fun story about getting ice from the refrigerator. The Cairn Terrier (Hampton Court's Ashley) was fun and had some spring in her step and was able to strike the perfect pose. Adam the Smooth Fox Terrier (Slyfox Sneak's A Peek) had an amazing half black half white face. The Norwich Terrier (Skyscot's Poker Chip) had a funny moment when he kicked the handlers hand away, he was a happy dog. The most pretty rust color was on the Irish Terrier (Fleet St Fenway Fan) and the West Highland White Terrier (Blythefell Fergus) had a puffy white head.
The Smooth Fox Terrier (GCH Slyfox Sneak's A Peek) took the top spot in the Terrier Group, followed by the Norfolk Terrier (GCH Cracknor Cross The Ts). Third and fourth places went to the Skye Terrier (GCH Cragsmoor Buddy Goodman) and the West Highland White Terrier (Ch Blythefell Fergus).
After four and a half hours of dog Heaven, it was time for the finale - Best in Show. Each dog came out and did an amazing job. They were the Bearded Collie Mr. Baggins, the Portugese Water Dog Ladybug, the Scottish Deerhound Hickory, Black Cocker Spaniel Beckham, Smooth Fox Terrier Adam, Chinese Shar-Pei Jayne and Pekingese Malachy. Our top picks were the Fox Terrier and Chinese Shar-Pei followed by the Bearded Collie and the Scottish Deerhound.
Best in Show was decided quickly and confidently - Hickory the Scottish Deerhound (GCH Foxcliffe Hickory Wind). Congratulations on a great win to Cecilia Dove, Dr. R Scott Dove and Sally Sweatt! |
